BLOOD BROTHERS tells the “story of the Johnstone twins – as like each other as two new pins – of one womb born on the self same day – how one was kept, and one given away.” This musical parable about class separation, nature vs. nurture, and economic warfare is set in Liverpool, England in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Mrs. Johnstone, a poor, working-class single mother finds herself pregnant with twins and is overcome with anxiety as to how she will ever afford two more children. By happenstance, her employer, the wealthy and well-connected Mrs. Lyons, is childless and begs her for one of the two after birth. Reluctantly, Mrs. Johnstone agrees, thereby making an evil bargain and setting in motion the play’s development and tragic outcome.
