In 1934 a Hollywood director arrives on a barren Irish island to make a movie. The possibility of becoming film stars whips the village into a frenzy, fueled by the local gossip. For lonely Cripple Billy the auditions are his big chance - to escape a life of ridicule, discover the truth about his parents’ drowning, and win the heart of his beloved, the sharp-tongued Helen.
