SYNOPSIS The Cripple of Inishmaan is a witty, dark comedy by contemporary Irish playwright Martin McDonagh, the author of the Tony Award winning The Beauty Queen of Leenane. Called by the NY Times "The most wickedly funny, brilliantly abrasive dramatist . . . a born storyteller," the NY Post also commented, "McDonagh's comic talent appears unlimited, and he also has...a touch of the poet and a profound sense of tragedy always dangerously lurking on comedy's untidy fringe. In short, young McDonagh is a playwright to reckon with..." In 1934 a Hollywood director arrives on a barren Irish island to make a movie. The possibility of becoming film stars whips the village into a frenzy, fueled by the local gossip. For lonely Cripple Billy the auditions are his big chance - to escape a life of ridicule, discover the truth about his parents drowning, and win the heart of his beloved, the sharp-tongued Helen. |
